The Sound of Music

The sound of music may not come to mind so readily when it comes to taking care of our health. Most of us are aware that the health of our bodies and well-being depends on certain factors like water, air, sunshine and sleep. The sound of music, good music, enjoyable music is also a key component to the health of our bodies and well-being. As we shed light on the healing properties of listening to the sound of music, we will gain a better understanding as to why we cannot leave this all important key on the back-burner when it comes to our health.

The auditory nerves in the ear are widely distributed throughout the body. They have more extensive connections than those of any other nerves in the body. To add to that, the sound of music ignites activity in multiple regions of the brain. If you happen to engaged in playing the instrument that produces the sound, all the regions of the brain are ignited. That says a lot about the power behind the sound of music.

Positive Emotions

Neuroscientists have discovered that listening to the sound of music heightens positive emotions. Positive emotions enhance creativity and elevates one’s mood by releasing a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Dopamine takes you to a higher level of thought where desires of the heart can be reached.

In light of this information, here is a list of healthy benefits achieved through the sound of music:

  • Reduces stress and combats anxiety.
  • Improves the immune system by creating a relaxed state for the entire body to be receptive to healing.
  • Improves cognitive performance.
  • Research has shown that it aids in memory.
  • It will increase workout endurance, music makes you want to express yourself with body movements.
  • The sound of music can be soothing to improve sleep quality.
  • Induces meditative states.
  • Enhances blood vessel function.
  • Relaxes patients before surgery.
  • Elevates mood while driving.

There is Healing in His Wings

When Saul was tormented by an evil spirit, David took the harp to play a tune. The harp has always been known to be a beautiful sounding instrument. As recorded in 1 Samuel 16:23, Saul experienced relief from his terror and felt better, and the evil spirit left him.

Music is the Culture of Heaven

When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy. – Job 38:7

Psalms is known as the book of worship/the hymnbook of the Temple. Psalms in Hebrew is Tehillim “Praises.” The title Psalms is a Greek word meaning “Instrumental music” and by extension, “The words accompanying the music.” The King and the Kingdom are the theme songs of the Psalms. One of Gods joy is the sound of music. Heaven is overflowing with music. In fact one of His beautiful cherubs was a musician. The cherubim are symbolic of God’s Holy presence and His majesty. The anointed cherub who covers with his wings is perfect in wisdom, beautiful beyond description, a musician, the worship leader. Timbrels and pipes were created in him. The wind instruments and the stringed instruments. The morning stars are angels that sing. There is spiritual power and influence in music. Sounds through a musical arrangement have the ability make a beautiful melody.

Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands

Music is a gift and a blessing from God Almighty. It brings vitality and strength. Strength is needed when you feel weak as you go through trials and tribulation. Paul and Silas were in prison when they began to sing with their prayers. The other prisoners were listening to the sound and the prison gates were opened and everyone’s chains and bonds were loosed, setting them free. That’s power!

Come Before His Presence with Singing

Strong emphasis is placed on the role that music plays in our lives. 1 Chronicles 9:33 records that the singers were employed in that type of work day and night. 2 Chronicles 5:12-14 gives the effect of one sound to be heard in praising and thanks with the instruments of music; God will fill the temple/body/the house of God. Lifting up your voice with the instruments of music moves God in a glorious way. 2 Kings 3:15 gives another effect, but now bring me a minstrel. When the minstrel played, the hand of the Lord came upon him.

Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord. – Ephesians 5:19

Music connects us to our soul. Our emotional and physical state resides in our souls. Music, the universal expression given to all in heaven and all on earth.

I will turn my ear to a proverb; with the harp I will expound my riddle. – Psalm 49:4

Genesis 4:19-21 records that Jubal, the son of Lamech was the father of all such as handle the harp and flute or the organ. God created instruments of music in heaven. Jubal was the inventor of instruments of music on earth. We have the birth of both stringed instruments, such as were touched by the fingers, or struck with a quill, as the “Harp” and of wind instruments, such as were blown. Eight generations from Adam we find the creative genius of music which is the culture of heaven.

Wake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I [myself] will awake early. – Psalm 57:8
